Faculty/Staff Resources
One of the goals of the E3 Institute is to equip faculty and staff with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to become champions for equity and excellence in STEM. These resources include information on inclusive pedagogy, curriculum design, graduate school preparation, among other topics.
EMPOWERED INSTRUCTORS
EMPOWER THEIR STUDENTS
In an effort to equip faculty and staff with the tools that they need to support students within their STEM courses and majors, E3 has compiled a list of pedagogical and campus resources that may be beneficial during instruction or advising. These resources are meant to provide a cursory overview of some tools that educators can use to improve teaching or course content and some of the office on campus that may be able to provide more personalized support for student needs.
Inclusive Instruction Techniques: Universal Design for Learning
UDL Guidelines are a dynamic tool designed to improve and optimize teaching for the benefit of all students and instructors. These guidelines offer suggestions that can implemented in every course, regardless of discipline or domain. Adapting course design to be purposeful and intentional using some of these guidelines benefits not only students with disabilities or accommodations but ALL students.
For more information on UDL guidelines, including proposed updates to the framework, visit the CAST website here.
Accessible by Design: Strategies for Creating Inclusive Course Materials
Creating accessible content, or adjusting exiting content to be accessible, is essential in order to ensure that people with disabilities or learning difficulties are able to access course content. Accessible design benefits everyone and ensures that all students are able to contain the information they need from course content.
Some examples of tools that can help improve content accessibility include:
- Screen Readers
- Alt Text Generators, including this Alt Text AI Generator
- Color Contrast Tools, including:
- ‘Insert Math Equation’ tool in Canvas
- Video captioning tools and video transcripts
- ‘Check Accessibility’ tools in Canvas and Microsoft Apps
For help developing accessible content or with questions about accessible features, instructors are urged to contact Instructional Design and Technology Services.
